Humphrey Comix #1

We have a new puppy named Humphrey, and his hobbies include eating things he finds on the ground and pooping in the house. It was pretty dark when I walked him tonight so I could not immediately tell if it was a weave, but he sure found a lot of them out there. We live across from an elementary school, so I really can't imagine where they came from.

I apologize to my neighbors for sticking it on their bushes where he can't reach.

Fangamer slips

Hi! Sorry to disappear for the past few weeks, I've been working on a couple of projects. This one is 200 packing slips for Fangamer, an online store that makes hell of sweet Earthbound/Mother merch. Recently I've only really felt like drawing fan art, so this was an excellent venue to channel those drawings into.

Holiday Card 2009

I've never sent out holiday cards before, and I had no idea what I was in for when I started, but I'm so glad that I did in the end because I'm extremely happy with this. Of course everything will always take longer than I think it will; I assumed I'd spend three days drawing/inking/coloring, but of course it took roughly two weeks. Then came the addressing, writing and sending... to about 50 people. As of writing this, I still have about three people left on my list. I can pretend it's still the holidays, right?

All in all, I'm really glad I did it. I swear I'm starting my 2010 card this week so I'll be on top of things next year!!

The top image was on the outside and the bottom was on the inside with a holiday greeting.

Alpine Ridge Monster

The original Spyro the Dragon game, though many would loathe me for saying so, influenced me like Mario influenced so many others. It enraptured me when I was 11; it was a bright, colorful game with DRAGONS and gorgeously designed levels and magical creatures and a good sense of humor, and every level was accompanied by a unique piece of music that gave it the perfect atmosphere of fantasy. I could really go on and on about what a huge game this was to me and my imagination. (It was also the first video game I ever beat on my own.)

This is a monster from the Alpine Ridge level in the aptly named Magic Crafters world. For a rather cutesy-looking game, these monsters were actually pretty terrifying. They'd come charging at you, all five times your size, with a mouth full of teeth and tusks, roaring ferociously and swatting you with their rhinoceros legs. Especially rendered in polygons.

Seriously, I was a huge nerd for this game. I still kind of am!

Everyone has those internal demons that make your heart stop and your stomach clench and your skin turn cold and your throat turn lumpy. It's tricky to expose them, and they might try to stop you. But it can help a lot. Flush out those demons.

Off to Poland!

Hi there, I'm about to leave on a two week vacation to Poland, where the roots of my family are deeply planted. I will sadly be missing out on an event at MoCCA promoting the volunteer show I am a part of, called "Meanwhile... at 594 Broadway: The Art of MoCCA's Volunteers". I am really disappointed I won't be able to make it, but a lot of the works up there are great and two of my friends, Mike Diaz and Nicole Virella, have stuff up as well. Also copies of Flamingo Island Part 1 and Alligator Day will be on sale! If you're able to make it, you can find out more info at the MoCCA Website. Check it out!

Oh man where have I been. All these rainy day put me all kinds of under the weather and I've been feeling withdrawl the more I realize this is the first time in sixteen years I won't be going to back to school in September. It's weird! I'm looking for jobs and drawing in the meantime, and I just bought my very first drafting table set, complete with chair and lamp, which has just been completed and is ready to be drawn upon. Exciting!

Still trying to get into the habit of updating regularly! Before this place gets too stagnant, let's get some art all up in here.

First, some fan art. This is a guest comic I did for my friend Jon's comic, Beyond the Canopy. Mine will probably make more sense if you read his comic first, but you shouldn't be upset because it's super cool.

More fanart for my friend Kasey and her webcomic Winters in Lavelle. You should read it too because you will not lose.

I was an editor on the SVA cartooning magazine this past year, which was a load of fun. These are two out of three of my editorial avatars from this school year's issues of Inkstains. Each one follows the theme of each issue - this year's themes were Food, Pirates! and the Great Outdoors. I remember drawing the pirate one while waiting for my sister to try on dresses at the Gap.

The rabbit and the turtle are characters I plan on putting into a webcomic, which I am in the process of writing. I am especially proud of how much the turtle looks like an avocado.

Next post I think I'll start putting up the pages from the first installment of Flamingo Island. Oh yeah, I did get book two done in time for MoCCA! I kind of cheated on the cover though, so I'm making a new one which all future copies will be bound in. It was quite the adventure, getting that book done in time.

MoCCA Latte

MoCCA! It's coming! It's a mere two days away!

I will be rocking it up with Jon and Kasey at table 619, which is in one of the southmost aisles towards the back but not against a wall. It's going to be very very fun and I'm just dancing with excitement! If you're interested in going, it's only $10 a day and $15 for the weekend, and you can find directions and more info at the MoCCA website. It's worth it!

I will definitely have Alligator Day and Flamingo Island part 1, but part 2 is in a bit of a pickle right now. Two of the original pages were taken for scanning to be part of the SVA senior cartooning magazine, and I forgot to scan one of them beforehand. The school says they won't get them back until next week, and though I'm working to get them back in time for scanning, chances are high that I won't have Part 2 ready for MoCCA. I'm feeling pretty awful about that since I pretty much promised that it would be there, but if anything, I will absolutely have it for SPX this October. I'll probably put the pages up here and on my deviantart to make up for it.

Hello! I have just officially graduated college! I still can't quite wrap my brain around it and have been nursing the shock with lots of sleeping and fretting about the rest of my life, but rest assured production is beginning again and I am very jazzed.

In about three weeks I will be at the MoCCA art fest in NYC. I will be sharing a table with these two cool cats, plus three other swell fellows, all of us SVA graduates. I will be selling both Alligator Day and Flamingo Island Pt 1, and with luck Flamingo Island Pt 2 will be finished by then and ready to join your collection. Below is a sample of the first page.

In the meantime I am working on some art trades, which is a really good way to keep myself drawing over the summer. I may open up to them on this blog after I finish the ones on my plate, so stay tuned.

Fresh Meat

Can we say, Best Night Ever? Yes I think we can.

SVA's student mini-comic convention went off without a hitch despite humidity, thunderstorms, and a photocopier out of toner. Set up and breakdown went smoothly and despite an embarrassingly sloppy cropping job, I got rid of all the comics I was selling. Me and Kasey and Ashley rocked those tables. Ladies Night! Tons of people showed up (thanks to our much more thorough aggressive advertising this year), including a bunch of my teachers, former and current, plus a surprise visit from Scott McCloud, who apparently is doing a seminar or something on comics this weekend and told everyone to come to Fresh Meat! Waoh it was awesome.

I had two comics at my table: one was Alligator Day, a three-pager I worked on last semester, and the second was part one of Flamingo Island, the major backbone comic of my senior portfolio. I plan to have the second part available for MoCCA 2009, and I will probably have a few more copies of Alligator Day in there as well.

I'm so happy with both covers!

a swim across the ocean

This is the final week of classes during my senior year at SVA. Senior year was devoted to developing a portfolio for the working world, and throughout the year I've been working on a comic called "Flamingo Island". It's the story of a young girl who swims across the ocean to become the queen of the only island in the world where pink lemons grow, and where flamingos coincidentally live as well.

Although it's still in progress, I plan to have Part One finished for MoCCA Art Fest in NYC this summer. In the meantime, here are two of my favorite pages.

I plan to tone and/or color them in the near future. I am very proud of them!
